He and his team develop and test systems that enable communication between the brain and external devices. New center to spotlight neurological autoimmune disorders
How do neurological disorders arise that are caused, triggered, or influenced by antibodies? What better possibilities are there for diagnosis – and above all for treatment? These are the questions addressed by the new Clinical Research Unit “BecauseY” headed by Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin. Innovative treatment options will especially benefit patients who at first glance are not suspected of having an antibody-mediated neurological disease. The German Research Foundation (DFG) is funding the collaborative project with 6.2 million euros for an initial term of four years.

The Mechanisms Behind Swallowing
Sensory cells in the vagus nerve can detect and locate food in the esophagus. Their signals help transport the food onward to the stomach. Signal failure leads to swallowing disorders, say a team led by Carmen Birchmeier at the Max Delbrück Center. They have published their findings in “Neuron.”

The aim of the ECN OIS Award is to empower young researchers in neuroscience to integrate the principles of open innovation and open science into their research and translate scientific knowledge into innovation that would address current societal challenges. The award candidates who compellingly implement the collaborative and innovative approaches into their research receive financial support and expert training for further development and implementation of their projects.
