Prof. Volker Haucke, Director at the Leibniz-Forschungsinstitut für Molekulare Pharmakologie (FMP) and member of the NeuroCure Cluster of Excellence, has been elected to the renowned "Academia Europaea".
The "Academia Europaea" is a European, non-governmental association that functions as an academy and welcomes academic members who collaborate to promote learning, education and research. The London-based “Academia Europaea” was founded in 1988 on the initiative of the British Royal Society and other national academies in Europe. The current membership numbers around 4,000, including leading experts in physics and technology, life sciences and medicine.
Volker Haucke obtained his doctorate degree in 1997 at the Biocenter of the University of Basel, Switzerland, in which he studied mitochondrial biogenesis in the group of Gottfried (Jeff) Schatz. After a postdoctoral period as a fellow of the EMBO and the Human Frontier Science Program (HFSP), tutored by Pietro De Camilli at the Yale University School of Medicine, he established his own laboratory at the University of Göttingen as a member of the EMBO Young Investigator Program. In 2003, meanwhile, he was appointed Full Professor of Biochemistry at the Freie Universität Berlin. Since 2012, Volker Haucke has been Director at the Leibniz-Forschungsinstitut für Molekulare Pharmakologie (FMP), Professor of Molecular Pharmacology at the Freie Universität Berlin and a member of the NeuroCure Cluster of Excellence. Volker Haucke and his team investigate the molecular mechanisms of endocytosis and endolysosomal membrane dynamics and their role in cell signaling and neurotransmission. His work is intended to help develop new strategies for acute chemical and pharmacological disorders. Volker Haucke has been honored on multiple occasions to date for his work, including the Avanti Award of the American Society for Biochemistry & Molecular Biology and the Feldberg Prize in 2020.

The Leibniz-Forschungsinstitut für Molekulare Pharmakologie (FMP) is part of the Forschungsverbund Berlin e.V. (FVB), who legally represents eight non-university research institutes - members of the Leibniz Association - in Berlin. The institutions pursue common interests within the framework of a single legal entity while maintaining their scientific autonomy. More than 1,900 employees work within the research association. The eight institutes were founded in 1992 and emerged from former institutes of the GDR Academy of Sciences.
