The fate of forgotten memories: Engram interference in Alzheimer's disease
On behalf of The Memory Tapestry: Weaving Insights Across Different Systems and Levels Group, Stefanie Poll from IEECR in Bonn, Germany will give a talk titled "The fate of forgotten memories: Engram interference in Alzheimer's disease" as part of the ongoing Student/Postdoc-Run Speaker Series (SPRSS).
Abstract:
Forgetting is a normal part of life, but in Alzheimer's disease it accelerates dramatically, turning memory loss into a defining symptom. We asked a simple question: are these memories truly gone, or just locked away? By tracking c-Fos activity in hippocampal engram cells, we found that the memory trace remains, but it's inaccessible to natural recall. This suggests that in Alzheimer's, memories may persist, but the brain has lost the key to unlock them.
